Han ber\u00e4ttade om sitt m\u00f6te med Obama och avslutade med att hoppas p\u00e5 att Obama skulle lyfta fram skolan mer under de (d\u00e5) kvarvarande 12 m\u00e5naderna fram till valet. S\u00e5 blev aldrig fallet men i sin andra biografi (hur nu en man som var helt ok\u00e4nd f\u00f6r fem \u00e5r sedan redan har hunnit med att skriva inte en utan tv\u00e5 biografier) ber\u00e4ttar Obama om sina ambitioner f\u00f6r skolan.<\/p>\n
The need for good teachers deserves emphasis. Recent studies show that the single most important factor in determining a students achievement isn\u2019t the color of their skin or where they come from but who their teach is. Unfortunately too many of our schools depend on inexperienced teachers with little training in the subjects they are teaching and too often those teachers are concentrated in already struggling schools. I constantly meet young people who have graduated from top colleges and have signed up through programs like Teach for America. For two years they have taught in some of the country\u2019s toughest schools. They find the work extraordinarily rewarding. The kids they teach benefit from their creativity and enthusiasm. But by the end of two years most have either changed careers or moved to suburban schools. A consequence of low pay, a lack of support from the educational bureaucracy and a pervasive feeling of isolation.\u00a0 If we\u2019re serious about building a 21st century school system we\u2019re gonna have to take the teaching profession seriously. It means paying teachers what they are worth. There\u2019s no reason for why an experienced, highly qualified and effective teacher shouldn\u2019t earn as much as a lawyer at the peak of his or her career. Highly skilled teachers in such critical fields as math or science as well as those who are willing to teach in the toughest urban schools should be paid even more. There\u2019s just one catch.
